How One Educator Changed Everything
When Miss Jennifer Rodriguez first walked into the Harrisburg Community Center five years ago, she never imagined she’d become a local child care hero. “I was working two jobs, struggling to make ends meet, and feeling completely overwhelmed,” she recalls. “My own children were barely getting the attention they needed, let alone the quality early education I dreamed of for them.”
Project Child’s professional development program became her lifeline. Through a combination of scholarships, mentorship, and ongoing training, Jennifer transformed her career trajectory. She completed her early childhood education certification, and today, she runs the most sought-after child care program in Saline County. “It wasn’t just about getting a qualification,” Jennifer explains. “It was about understanding how to truly support children’s growth – not just academically, but emotionally and socially.”
Dr. Marcus Thompson, a child development expert from Southern Illinois University, points to Jennifer’s story as a perfect example of systemic change. “When we invest in educators like Jennifer, we’re not just supporting one person – we’re lifting entire communities,” he notes. “These are the unsung heroes who make real differences in children’s lives.”

Her program now serves over 40 children from various backgrounds, with a particular focus on supporting working families in rural southern Illinois. Jennifer has become a vocal advocate for accessible, high-quality child care, regularly speaking at community meetings and working with local organizations to expand support for early childhood education.
